First Content, Then Images, Now Audio and Video

Search engines stated life by indexing pages of written content. They moved on then to indexing images, a well used feature. Now it’s time for video.

Google Labs are now displaying political videos that have been indexed for key terms. Select a video, enter a search term and jump through the video to that search term. You don’t have to listen to the whole video to hear the points that are important to you. What is Audio Indexing:

Google Audio Indexing is a new technology from Google that allows users to better search and watch videos from various YouTube channels. It uses speech technology to find spoken words inside videos and lets the user jump to the right portion of the video where these words are spoken.

We can assume that eventually Google will release it to mainstream use so that any video can be indexed. Indexed videos, if you can have them hosted on your own site will help to increase keyword counts on the pages where they occur.

More importantly, they will provide users with a quick way to find information. This can be helpful if the visitor has already seen the video, but want to check back on a particular point. I can envisage ‘how to’ type videos finding this particularly helpful.

The question now will be how long this stays in Google Labs and whether or not if will be extended beyond political content while in the labs.
